Naomi Bechtold, Purdue Extension - Marion County, Family Resource Management Educator


In her role as an Extension Educator, Naomi provides the link between land grant university research and Indiana residents by creating innovative learning opportunities that address local issues. She works with community partners to create and develop educational programs centered on personal financial management and healthy living.

Naomi has an AB in Public Policy from Duke University and an MBA from Lehigh University. She is in the process of completing her Accredited Financial Counselor certification.

Michelle Beer - Indiana Association of United Ways, Community Impact Director

Michelle Beer has had a ten year career in the nonprofit sector, spending the last six years at United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI). Michelle served as Director of UWCI’s Income priority.   In this capacity she has worked with various community-wide initiatives focused on financial education and stability. She currently co-chairs the Indianapolis Asset Building Coalition and is a member of the local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Advisory Board.

In addition to her work with asset building initiatives, Michelle has several years of experience in grant writing and administration, program and organizational evaluation, and volunteer management. Michelle holds a Masters of Social Work degree from IUPUI, with a concentration in Leadership.

David Dalton - Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana, Inc., Goodwill TalentSource Employment Specialist

David Dalton is an Employment Specialist for Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana. As an Employment Specialist for TalentSource his focus is on developing relationships with employers in a variety of industries, counseling and placing candidates in high wage positions, and offering retention services to ensure the success of the population Goodwill serves.  Goodwill's mission is to improve the economic self - sufficiency and well -being of adults and the future employability of young people.

Kathleen Lara - Prosperity Indiana, Convener and Policy Director

Kathleen Lara serves as Policy Director, working to advance Prosperity Indiana member priorities by helping to craft and advance Prosperity Indiana's policy agenda.  She also broadly engages members by organizing affinity groups on issues of homelessness, affordable housing, homeownership and foreclosure, asset-building, land banking, leadership, and microenterprise. Additionally, she works to coordinate statewide Homeward Bound events and produce the Statewide Conference on Housing and Community Economic Development.

Kathleen is a native of Indianapolis, IN, and she holds a BA in Journalism and Political Science from Indiana University.

Kate McKnight - Internal Revenue Service, Senior Relationship Tax Consultant and Earned Income Credit Coordinator

Previously, Kate has served as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Representative, Taxpayer Service Specialist, Manager and Senior Tax Specialist at the Internal Revenue Service. Currently, she is a Senior Relationship Tax Consultant and the Earned Income Credit Coordinator for Indiana. She also plays an active role in the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, is the Internal Revenue Service’s representative on the Indianapolis Asset Building Coalition as well as the Indianapolis Territory’s Financial Education and Asset Building (FEAB) Subject Matter Expert.

Kate has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bates College in Maine and studied accounting in the Masters of Accounting program at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Kate is married and the proud mother of two.

Marie Morse - HomesteadCS, Executive Director

Marie Morse has been with Lafayette Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. dba Homestead Consulting Services since 1985.  She has held various positions within the organization including financial and programming positions.  She has been the Executive Director of the organization since 2007.  As Executive Director, her duties include administration: staff management, program management, financial management, board, resident & volunteer management, resource development, and public relations.

Jahanah Murphy-Sims - Early Learning Indiana, Manager of Regional Outreach and Capacity Building

Jahanah currently serves as Manager of Regional Outreach and Capacity Building for Early Learning Indiana.  In her role she works with various stakeholders across the state to strengthen and support the infrastructure of early childhood education in Indiana.  In previous roles Jahanah served as a financial coach, and she continues to be passionate about helping individuals, families and communities achieve financial success.  

Jahanah has a B.A. in Spanish from Indiana University and holds certifications in Financial Education, Foreclosure Prevention and Housing Counseling.  In her free time Jahanah enjoys cooking, gardening and working on her small businesses.  She and her longtime companion live on the far eastside of Indianapolis with their two dogs.

Phil Schuman - Indiana University, Director of Financial Literacy

Phil Schuman serves as Director of Financial Literacy at Indiana University,  managing the award-winning IU MoneySmarts program, including authoring content and resources for students on, implementing a required financial literacy module for all new students, and teaching a personal finance First Year Seminar at IUPUI. Phil is the founder of the Indiana University's MoneySmarts Team, a group of undergraduate and graduate students trained to provide one-on-one education and group presentations on finances to students across all IU campuses. Phil is also the Co-founder of the National Summit on Collegiate Financial Wellness. Phil graduated with an MBA from the Kelley School of Business and a BA in Psychology from DePauw University. 

Mark Tarpey - Indiana Department of Financial Institutions, Retired

Mark spent 40 years with the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions, a regulatory agency for state chartered depository institutions and other entities who extend various types of consumer credit. He was a field examiner, Consumer Credit Division Supervisor and Deputy Director during his tenure. He obtained his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation in 1987. Mark has had a continuing interest in financial literacy for all ages and demographics.
