ILLEGAL DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES

You have legal rights protecting you from debt collectors. Debt collectors are prohibited from harassing consumers, making false statements, or participate in unfair practices. Any violation of your rights may entitle you to legal recourse against the debt collectors.

REQUEST YOUR FREE CREDIT REPORT

Once every 12 months, American consumers can request a free credit reportfrom each of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Many lenders and other commercial users consider these reports when deciding  to extend credit, offer you services, or even hire you for a job. Requesting your credit score can help you dispute inaccurately reported information, investigate if your identity has been stolen, or preparing to make a large purchase.

In collaboration with Call For Action, an international nonprofit network of consumer hotlines, The Indianapolis Star have opened a hotline for Indiana residents who need help resolving their consumer problems. The hotline has solved over 500 Indiana cases and have returned over $500,000 to Indiana consumers.
